Las Vegas (August 30, 2007) - United Jewish Community/Jewish Federation of Las Vegas Board of Directors recently announced that Dr. Martin Indyk, the former US Ambassador to Israel, will speak at an exclusive engagement in Las Vegas at the organization's Donor Appreciation Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 2, 2007. The meeting will be held in The Grand Ballroom at Bellagio Las Vegas at 7 p.m. with a dessert reception immediately following the program.
Las Vegans will get an unprecedented opportunity to hear firsthand about the challenges and ongoing issues present in the Middle East at the Federation's 2007 Annual Meeting which is open to the entire community. UJC Annual Campaign donors receive two complimentary tickets to the event. Non-donors can purchase tickets for $18 per person to attend this landmark event. There is a non-donor discount available for seniors 60 years and older and full-time students.
With his extraordinary depth and breadth of knowledge and experience on the Middle East, Dr. Indyk speaks with unusual candor and wisdom. Dr. Indyk can shed light on such issues as the status of the Middle East peace process, who's who in Israeli politics, and efforts to resolve the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict.
"Martin Indyk is one of the world's foremost experts on the Middle East," said Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. "This is a rare opportunity for our community to learn more about Israel's current and future survival amidst ongoing violence and turmoil in the Middle East. I hope all Las Vegans take advantage of this one-night only opportunity to hear from this amazing world scholar."
As the first and second Jewish American Ambassador to Israel, Indyk has spent the last decade building bridges of peace between Israel and the Arab world. In 1993, he became President Clinton's Middle East advisor at the National Security Council, where he was responsible for helping to negotiate the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty and crafting the Clinton Administration's policy of "dual containment" of Iraq and Iran.
In addition to his extensive experience with Middle East policy, Ambassador Indyk served for eight years as the founding Executive Director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Currently, Ambassador Indyk is Director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the prestigious Brookings Institute in Washington D.C.
Making the announcement on behalf of Federation's Board of Directors, Executive Committee member Leonard Stone said, "Ambassador Indyk promises to be one of the most exceptional speakers our Jewish community has had the opportunity to hear. Bringing him to Las Vegas to share his unique perspective on the volatile situation in the Middle East with our community is a way for us to express our appreciation to the thousands of new and loyal donors to our community's 2007 annual fundraising campaign."
