In today’s swiftly evolving society, new laws and mandates often conflict with deeply rooted faith convictions. If you are a believer, it is crucial to identify these challenges and respond with conviction and compassion, ensuring you uphold your beliefs while showing love and respect to your employers, employees, clients, customers and neighbors. Below, I provide a few examples of such laws or mandates and guidance on navigating them legally and faithfully. Please note, these are personal suggestions; I am not a licensed attorney.
Mandates on Gender Identity and Pronouns: In recent years, mandates requiring individuals to use certain pronouns based on self-identified gender have surfaced in various workplaces and institutions. For many, who hold that God created humanity male and female, these mandates can create ethical dilemmas. Suggestion: Focus on affirming that each person has value while being honest about your faith and convictions. Love them like God loves all His creation. When required to use certain pronouns, seek accommodation under the First Amendment right to free speech and religious liberty by respectfully using names instead. Many workplaces and educational institutions offer exemptions or reasonable accommodations when approached thoughtfully.
Abortion Legislation and Related Mandates: Laws mandating insurance coverage for abortifacients and requiring healthcare professionals to participate in abortion-related services directly challenge beliefs about the sanctity of life. Suggestion: Healthcare providers should invoke the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) or seek protections under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to request exemptions.
Organizations can also file for a religious exemption under the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate.
Mandatory Inclusivity Training: Many businesses and government agencies now require inclusivity training that may promote ideologies conflicting with your beliefs. Employees might feel compelled to endorse views inconsistent with their faith. Suggestion: Employees should express their concerns with sensitivity and humility, seeking accommodations under Title VII. Opting for alternative training or requesting exemption due to deeply held religious beliefs.
Public Accommodation Laws: Laws requiring businesses to serve all customers or clients regardless of their beliefs can challenge business owners. Suggestion: Business owners should seek legal guidance to navigate their rights under RFRA and state-level religious freedom statutes. Emphasizing the distinction between serving customers or clients equally and endorsing specific messages can provide a clear legal basis for exemptions. It’s essential to be transparent in business practices to minimize misunderstandings and potential conflicts. Again, approach all conflicts with humility and compassion. The adage that you attract more bees with honey is the correct approach.
Curriculum Changes in Public Education – Some states have introduced curriculums that include material on sexual orientation, gender identity and secular humanism, which may conflict with your beliefs and convictions. Parents are often left concerned about what their children are taught. Suggestion: Parents should be proactive in understanding the curriculum and voicing their concerns with teachers and at school board meetings. They can request alternative assignments or opt-out provisions under existing state laws. Building relationships with educators and actively engaging in the school community can foster open dialogue and understanding. However, if your child is exposed to a curriculum that contradicts your beliefs, don’t compromise. Explore alternative education options like homeschooling, private schools and charter schools. If affordability is a concern, consider scholarships, sponsorships and grants that can help cover the costs.
Call to Action: When challenging the system, it’s crucial to document every step you take, including correspondence with the opposing party. Keep records of all your requests and maintain clear communications, whether it’s a customer, client, employer, employee. Navigating the delicate balance between adherence to the law and faith convictions requires wisdom, humility, courage and patience. As Jesus taught, “be wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). It’s crucial for people of faith to engage in these discussions thoughtfully and legally, appealing to existing protections while maintaining a posture of love and respect for all. By doing so, we uphold our convictions without compromising our witness in an increasingly polarized world. Bottom line: If all avenues of appeasement don’t work, I highly suggest you Honor God above all. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36
