Standing Against the Storm

June 1, 2025 by Lyle E Brennan

There seems to be a growing sickness in the soul of our nation… a sickness that reveals itself in hatred for our fellow man and disregard for the laws that safeguard our freedoms. The bitter fruit of these corrupt roots is being seen in our government with broken communities, lawless streets and divided hearts across America. Yet the Word of God gives us a path forward: “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).

Hatred and lawlessness are not new, but when a nation begins to excuse or even promote them, it starts down a path of destruction. We see this happening… not just in headlines with the political parties, but right here in the neighborhoods of Nevada and beyond.

Consider the tragedy in Las Vegas, where two police officers were deliberately targeted and killed by a teenage driver… who later bragged about it on video. This was not a moment of blind rage or an accident. It was hatred and rebellion on full display. A culture that mocks authority, despises order, and glorifies violence has raised a generation more concerned with going viral than doing what is right. Even worse, many in society explain away this behavior as a symptom of poverty or injustice, rather than what it truly is: rebellion against God and the values that once made this country strong.

What’s driving this collapse of order and decency? It’s not just political… it’s spiritual. When we remove God from schools, the Bible from courts, and prayer from public life, we should not be surprised when morality unravels. When truth is relative and is traded for tolerance and righteousness for relativism, we lose more than our way… we lose our soul.

Nevada, like the rest of the nation, is experiencing the consequences of seeds sown in selfishness and sin. Disdain for law enforcement, contempt for basic civility, and disregard for law have turned what should be peaceful cities into battlegrounds. Yet in the midst of this darkness, there is still light for those willing to stand.
There are parents still teaching respect. There are still politicians that stand up for good government and that represent their constitutes. There are pastors still preaching truth. There are men and women in uniform who risk their lives to preserve peace. And there are citizens… right here in Nevada… who still believe in prayer, in family, in justice, and in the goodness of God.

We must remember that hatred is not defeated by more hatred, and lawlessness is not overcome by silence. The answer isn’t political… it’s moral. It’s spiritual. We must return to the foundations: the Word of God, the Ten Commandments, our founding constitution, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.

Call to Action: It starts in the home, continues in the church, and must reach the public square. Scripture warns in Isaiah 5:20, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil.” Today, criminals are coddled while those who uphold the law are condemned. That cannot last. A house divided will not stand. But there is hope.

“If we humble ourselves and pray… if we turn from our wicked ways… God will heal our land” (2 Chronicles 7:14). Let us speak the truth in love. Let us stand for what is right, even when it’s unpopular. And let us boldly raise our children with these values… putting others before ourselves… trusting that in due time, our efforts will bear fruit.

Let us not be haters and lawbreakers… but lovers of truth and keepers of peace. That is how we revive the heart of America.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV) “If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
