Why America Must Stand with Israel

December 6, 2023 by Lyle E Brennan

The relationship between the United States and Israel is more than just foreign policy for both countries. It’s a profound alignment of values and principles as well as a shared vision for the future that cherishes freedom, democracy and the sanctity of human life. From the pulpit of today’s preachers to the pens of our Founding Fathers, Israelite perseverance has served as a lesson of resilience and faith. Israel’s determination and belief in a cause greater than themselves has mirrored the American spirit. We can see our own struggle for independence reflected in Israel’s journey to the promised land, a land flowing with milk and honey, the very embodiment of the American dream.

Moreover, the biblical mandate to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6) has been internalized in the American conscience, suggesting a divine directive to support Israel. This scriptural call does not merely speak to individual devotion, but to national policy. The fate of Israel is intertwined with the spiritual well-being of the world. Israel has and will continue to have a unique and pivotal role in the grand tapestry of human history.

American support for Israel is a statement against the forces of tyranny and oppression. Israel stands as a solitary beacon of democracy in a region overshadowed by autocracy and fundamentalism. By standing with Israel, America reaffirms its commitment to the principles of liberty and justice for all – ideals held by both nations and enshrined in their respective founding documents.

The actions of Hamas on October 7th were unconscionable and should rightly be condemned by every single nation on earth, to say nothing of individuals. As we continue to hear survival accounts and see videos from Hamas’ own terrorists, this picture of unspeakable cruelty that was visited upon man, woman and child indiscriminately becomes clear, underlining the reason for our objection. The only just response is unwavering support for Israel and unmitigated condemnation for Hamas and anyone who supports the terror organization, even those within our own country.

Beyond the ethical concerns, from a national perspective, the alternatives to supporting Israel in the context of Middle Eastern politics are limited and fraught with complexities. The options are to either take a passive approach, maintain current support with potential diplomatic consequences for Israel or shift support to groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. The latter is not a viable option given both groups are designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S., they clearly oppose Israel’s very existence and they are anti-American. Therefore, the stance is clear: standing with Israel is the practical choice from the U.S. perspective.

Supporting Israel is a manifestation of America’s identity and destiny. It is a commitment rooted in a shared heritage and nurtured by the hopes for a peaceful world. The echoes of the past and the promises of scripture lead to an incontrovertible conclusion: to stand with Israel is to stand on the right side of history.

CALL TO ACTION: It is high time for wisdom and discernment to guide our approach. We must ensure that America reinforces, not hinders, our enduring bond and alliance with Israel. To our leaders in government: I implore you to reevaluate and affirm policies that support Israel’s sovereignty, safety and prosperity. To advocates and allies: step forward, make your support vocal and visible. Share the narrative of Israel’s historical and moral right to exist and prosper. To every citizen: I urge you to stand with Israel, whether through investment, education or public solidarity.

We must not simply watch as the current tragedy unfolds. It’s imperative that America stands steadfast with Israel for whatever they need. Time and again, misguided efforts to placate those hostile to both our nations have led the U.S. to waver, pressuring Israel into relinquishing hard-won land, paid for in blood and bravery. Yet, these concessions have only emboldened our adversaries, resulting in renewed threats and loss of Israeli and American lives. Good intentions are not sufficient; America’s actions must match the unwavering support Israel needs and deserves. Israel’s enemies are America’s enemies.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV) “If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
